Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s lease at Longwood Center named “Life Sciences Deal of the Year” by Commercial Brokers Association

BOSTON – March 13, 2013 – When Dana-Farber Cancer Institute announced plans to lease 154,100 square of space in Boston’s Longwood Center, the organization provided the proposed project with a much needed anchor tenant.  The importance of the lease was not lost on the Commercial Brokers Association, which last week recognized the transaction as its 2012 “Life Sciences Deal of the Year.”

“This was a significant transaction, involving a world renowned organization and a major new life sciences project for the city of Boston,” said Robert Richards, president of Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, which brokered the transaction on behalf of Dana-Farber.  “We are pleased to have worked on the transaction, which involved cooperation among Dana-Farber, the City of Boston and the developers.  It’s great to see the lease get recognized by the CBA.”

Longwood Center is a proposed 11-story building, located on a 1.02-acre site at 360 Longwood Avenue (at the intersection of Longwood and Brookline Avenues).  The project plans include an approximately 414,000 rentable square foot, LEED® Silver facility with highly flexible, modern laboratory and office settings, as well as a variety of state-of-the-art environments for translation and open innovation.  Longwood Center is owned by a joint venture comprised of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., Charles River Realty Investors, Clarion Partners and National Development.  The project is scheduled for completion near the end of 2014.

Longwood Center will become a centerpiece of Dana-Farber’s groundbreaking research efforts.  The location will be designed to allow Dana-Farber to expand its translational research programs and initiatives, which are focused, in part, on accelerating the pace that laboratory discoveries are converted into clinical uses.  By consolidating and expanding its research space, Dana-Farber expects Longwood Center to help boost collaboration and efficiencies.  Dana-Farber is the top-ranked cancer center in New England and one of the largest federal research grant recipients among independent hospitals in the United States.

Robert Richards, president, and Chris McCauley, senior vice president, of Richards Barry Joyce & Partners represented Dana-Farber in the lease.  The building developers were represented by Jack O’Neil from National Development and Thomas Andrews of Alexandria Real Estate Equities.

The award was presented at the Commercial Brokers Association’s Achievement Awards Dinner, which was held on March 10 at the InterContinental Boston.
